Despite being an engineer and humanitarian, known for his efficiency, problem solving skills, and kindness, Hoover’s presidency was marked by chaos and despair. He ascribed to the “invisible hand” theory of economics espoused by Adam Smith. By most accounts, this worsened and lengthened the Great Depression, for which Hoover will forever be synonymous.
