- Gargoyles bear witness to the lively imagination of medieval craftsmen. The term originates from the Latin “gargulio”, meaning throat. Gargoyles served both a practical and spiritual function. Projecting from cornices and parapets, they acted as water spouts. They were also thought to scare off evil spirits, with the logic that the building was already possessed so the demon spirit would pass over it. In a simpler form they existed in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, but they are particularly characteristic of Gothic and Gothic Revival styles, and they are also featured in Chinese architecture. In medieval architecture, the earliest surviving gargoyle is a Romanesque example at Autun Cathedral, c.1120. By the 13th century they appeared all over Europe and developed into their final form of elongated, grotesque figures featuring animals, humans, and monsters or combinations thereof. In the 14th and 15th centuries, sculptures similar to gargoyles but not serving their drainage function were used to adorn buildings. The term gargoyle is sometimes applied to these purely decorative versions, though the proper term is chimera. With the introduction of lead drainpipes in the 16th century, gargoyles were no longer needed. The most famous gargoyles are the series of gigantic mythical creatures at Notre-Dame, and more recent outstanding examples may be found on the Chrysler Building in New York City and at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC.

- What makes these owls especially gratifying is that a portion of the purchase price will be donated to wildlife preservation.
- After thorough research, Harmony Ball Company has selected Back To The Wild - a privately owned, non-profit 501(c)(3) wildlife rehabilitation and nature education center in Castalia, Ohio - as the donation recipient. Five percent of the wholesale purchase price throughout 2005 will be sent to this very worthwhile organization. Already, based on booked orders, $2000 has been raised.
- Each year, thousands of wild animals are treated at this center, including hawks, owls, eagles, deer, fox, rabbits, squirrels, songbirds, waterfowl, reptiles and amphibians. Every effort is made to return an animal back into its natural habitat. Special permits allow permanently disabled, non-releasable live hawks and owls to be used as educational tools to help visitors understand the most critical problem facing wildlife today - loss of habitat. Nearly 50,000 guests visit annually and are encouraged to take an active role in becoming responsible caretakers of the earth.
